When a new short shaft mud motor doesn't clear the rear pods on an aluminum duck boat, you've got a real problem. You can't just run the motor and hope for the best - the geometry is wrong and something will get damaged. The fix here was a false transom conversion, which is exactly what it sounds like: a new transom structure built forward of the original to give the motor the clearance it needs to operate without interference.

We fabbed the entire false transom assembly out of aluminum and TIG welded it directly to the existing boat structure. A big chunk of this work was done in position and overhead - not the easiest way to weld aluminum, but that's what the job required. Aluminum TIG welding demands a clean, controlled arc and a steady hand, especially when you're not working flat on a table. There's no room for sloppy technique when you're integrating new structure into a boat hull that has to stay watertight.

The fabricated transom section went together with tight, consistent welds throughout - corner joints, horizontal runs, and the overhead passes that nobody enjoys doing but that are critical to the structural integrity of the whole assembly. Once it was fitted and welded into the boat, the motor mount position was solved and the customer had exactly the clearance needed for the new drive setup.

Turnaround was fast on this one. The owner needed the boat back quickly so he could pick up the new motor - so we kept the timeline tight without cutting corners on the weld quality. That's the balance you have to strike on jobs like this. Speed matters, but so does doing it right the first time. A bad weld on a boat transom isn't something you want to discover out in the marsh.
